White gold, yellow gold, red gold or platinum

Our engagement rings and wedding bands are made in solid 18k gold or platinum. This is how the four metals differ, so you know what you are choosing.

The short answer

18k gold is 75 percent pure gold. The rest decides the colour: palladium makes white gold, silver and copper make yellow gold, and more copper makes red gold. Platinum is a metal of its own and white all the way through. If you want a white ring that keeps its colour without upkeep, choose platinum. If you want a warm tone that never needs a surface treatment, choose yellow or red gold.

18k white gold

White gold is 18k gold alloyed with palladium, which gives it a light, greyish white base. To get a fully white, bright surface, the ring is plated with a thin layer of rhodium, a metal from the platinum group.

The rhodium wears slowly where the ring sees the most contact, and the gold's own slightly warmer tone can start to show through. That is normal, and a new rhodium plating makes the ring white again. How often depends on how much you wear it.

Good to know: our white gold is alloyed with palladium instead of nickel. It is lighter than platinum and gives the same white look around a diamond.

18k yellow gold

Yellow gold is 18k gold alloyed with silver and copper. The colour runs all the way through the metal, so there is no plating to wear off. Scratches and dull patches polish out.

It is the tone most people picture when they hear the word gold, and the one with the longest history in jewellery. In Sweden today, yellow gold is less common than white and red gold.

18k Swedish red gold

Swedish red gold is 18k gold with a higher share of copper than yellow gold. That gives it a rose red tone, noticeably redder than the rose gold common in other countries.

Like yellow gold, red gold has its colour all the way through and needs no surface treatment. The copper also makes the metal slightly harder, which shows on a ring worn every day. The tone can deepen a little over the years.

Platinum

Our platinum is 950, which means 95 percent pure platinum. It is a metal of its own, not a gold alloy. It is white all the way through, needs no plating and keeps its colour for life.

Platinum is dense and noticeably heavier than gold, so the ring feels more substantial on the hand. When platinum is scratched, the metal is pushed aside rather than lost, and over time the surface takes on a soft, matte patina. If you want the shine back, it polishes out.

Good to know: platinum is a good choice if you have sensitive skin.
